The UK Government is introducing a statutory day-one right to Bereavement Leave, providing employees with a legal entitlement to take time away from work following a loss. On 22 September 2026 the UK Government published its response to the consultation on the new right («Response»), confirming key aspects of the new entitlement including eligibility, timing and notice requirements. Eligible employees will be able to take up to two weeks’ leave following the death of a loved one or a qualifying pregnancy loss, pro-rated to reflect their usual working pattern. The new right is due to come into force in April 2027.
